The Curl-Cutting Technique That's Taking Instagram By Storm Written by Michelle Mckelvey

Nubia Suarez, a curl specialist and salon owner in Westfield, NJ, has spent 40 years honing her craft. As a certified educator for curl-centric brands like DEVACurl and Ouidad, Suarez noticed certain things were missing from the industry—education and acceptance topped that list. “I decided to specialize in working with curly hair because I wanted women to embrace their curls and have the freedom to wear their hair how they wanted,” Suarez says.

Once embracing natural texture became more popular, Suarez dove even deeper into her passion. “When I saw how the curl community was evolving and taking pride in their hair, it sparked something in me,” she says. Drawing inspiration from different types of texture, and eager to bring something new to the industry, Suarez created a cutting method that brings curls back to life.

The Rezo Cut, a cutting method Suarez developed to optimize hair’s body, balance and shape, has quickly taken the Instagram world by storm. We’re not kidding—If you scroll through Suarez’s Instagram page (@nubiarezo), you’ll see hundreds of dramatic transformations made possible by the curl-cutting technique. “The finished result of the Rezo Cut offers incredible volume but it can also be blown out straight,” Suarez says, meaning it’s compatible with just about every hair texture. Though Suarez saves the exact details of her cutting technique for her Rezo Academy classes, she emphasizes the importance of cutting curls while they’re dry and creating an even length of curls around your clients’ head.
